Espresso Cafe

The experience of living in Berlin shortly after the fall of the wall inspired me to record the subtle transformations of the city in the form of a visual diary. An abundance of eastern movie equipment enabled me to document the city extensively as I cycled throughout East and West Berlin.

The speed of change was often startling and the abrupt demolition of familiar landmarks became an unsettling experience. The Espresso Cafˇ studies were a mixed media documentation of one such landmark. During the DDR regime the Espresso was a large cafˇ, popular with students of the Humboldt University.

After the fall of the Socialist State the cafˇ was promptly closed to make way for an edifice more befitting of this prestigious address. Through the superimposition of moving and still imagery the study reanimates to building for one last sitting.

A series of Interior studies produced at the same time try to capture the twilight months of these long gone spaces.
