Tazza Cafe, Alice Lofts

Providence, Rhode Island

This project involves to redesign of a poopular cafe and music venue in Downtown Providence.

The demolition of an adjacent city block exposed the generous interior space to excessive natural daylight and we were commissioned to explore how greater intimacy could be achieved during thhe day.

The proposal retains the existing streetside ambiancce by conceptually bringing the street into the space and providing a secondary innterior partition which divides the space diagonally through the center. This interio facade provide spaces of intimacy hidden from the geneous glazing of the buildings facade.

In order to accommodate the need for flexible use, the scheme proposes a rigid curtain that divides dancers or standing audiences from seated guests. This strategy however, provides discreet views of performances from all locations.

Phase One of this project achieves greater intimacy through a revised color scheme. A new backbar provides greater storage for the counter staff, displays an extensive wine selection and repositions the service location for waiting staff.
