This
project involves the extention of an existing seaside cottage
on the East Bay of Rhode Island. The cottage was built at the
turn of the last century to provide a retreat for staff of the
Providence State House. Despite its intended use as a summer
cottage ,the building has been occupied year round since the
seventies when many similar cottages became family homes.
The
addition to this modest home is expansive, our strategy has
been to retain the scale and integrity of the original structure.
The addition is conceived as a cluster of new buildings, the
largest of which is a tower; this provides circulation to the
neighboring structures by way of a narrow bridge.
We hope that the project provides an alternative solution to
the current trend for tearing down the smaller dwellings and
replacing them with considerably larger properties.
